Long Story Short – It’s all about Jesus!

Many would say that Jesus was a ‘good man’, but the Bible portrays him as so much more than that. The eye witness accounts of his life we find in the first four books of the New Testament make compelling reading as we see Jesus perform incredible miracles, amaze people with his wisdom in teaching and make claims to be God!

We also see as we read that he wasn’t liked by everyone, in fact some people hated him so much for what he did and said that they wanted to kill him! Commenting on this, C.S. Lewis the 20th century author stated that any man who made the claims Jesus made about himself is either a lunatic, a liar or truly is who he claims to be – God. Jesus didn’t leave us with the option of saying he was just a ‘good man’. He is either mad, bad or God, those are the only options open to us.

If Jesus was simply a lunatic or worse a liar, within a few years of his death it’s likely he would have been forgotten; Yet 2000 years on he’s more talked about today than ever. Why? Jesus didn’t stay dead! Three days after being executed by the Romans, when all seemed lost, with his followers scattered and disillusioned, he began appearing to them alive from the dead!

In rising again from the dead he verified His claims to truly be the Son of God and in so doing fulfilled Jewish prophesies about the coming saviour that had been spoken over 700 years before. This moment gave birth to Christianity. Not just as a religious code or belief system but an offer of relationship with the living God, a relationship you can enter into today!

There’s more to explore than that, but it’s a very good place to start.

St Jerome is reputed to have said that the Bible is shallow enough for a child to come and drink without fear of drowning and deep enough for a theologian to swim in without ever touching the bottom. We believe that the bible, as the word of God for us, speaks with authority and clarity today.

As a result  when we gather on a Sunday we spend a good amount of our time seeking to understand and apply the teachings of Jesus and the Bible to our lives today. Why don’t you come along one Sunday and join us as we explore together.

If you’re interested in finding out more about the core beliefs of the Christian faith scroll down for a brief outline of core beliefs which we would uphold and teach.

The one true God who lives eternally in three persons – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

The love, grace and sovereignty of God in creating, sustaining, ruling, redeeming and judging the world.

The divine inspiration and supreme authority of the Old and New Testament Scriptures, which are the written Word of God – fully trustworthy for faith and conduct.

The dignity of all people, made male and female in God’s image to love, be holy and care for creation, yet corrupted by sin, which incurs divine wrath and judgement.

The incarnation of God’s eternal Son, the Lord Jesus Christ – born of the virgin Mary; truly divine and truly human, yet without sin.

The atoning sacrifice of Christ on the cross: dying in our place, paying the price of sin and defeating evil, so reconciling us with God.

The bodily resurrection of Christ, the first fruits of our resurrection; his ascension to the Father, and his reign and mediation as the only Saviour of the world.

The justification of sinners solely by the grace of God through faith in Christ.

The ministry of God the Holy Spirit, who leads us to repentance, unites us with Christ through new birth, empowers our discipleship and enables our witness.

The church, the body of Christ both local and universal, the priesthood of all believers — given life by the Spirit and endowed with the Spirit’s gifts to worship God and proclaim the gospel, promoting justice and love.

The personal and visible return of Jesus Christ to fulfil the purposes of God, who will raise all people to judgement, bring eternal life to the redeemed and eternal condemnation to the lost, and establish a new heaven and new earth.
