Thoughts on the Journey...
Mary and Joseph travelled to Bethlehem in obedience to the Roman summons but also in obedience to God. It would not have been easy for Mary to make this journey as she neared her term. Bethlehem is 1493 feat (455 m) higher than Nazareth, up in the Judean mountains and they would have had to had to go down before they went up. The terrain was steep and rugged.
The long hours on the road woud have given Mary plentry of time to wonder at what lay ahead.
