Thoughts from Caroline
The song "Thorns in the Straw" speaks about the birth of Jesus and wonders how much Mary understood about what the future would hold for her son. The gifts the Wise Men brought would have hinted at what lay in store.
The path set out for Jesus to travel was a hard one, but key to this was his willingness to travel that road. It show the depths of God's love for fallen humankind that he would provide the sacrifice to bring us back to himself.
Satan tried to ruin it all from the start in the garden of Eden and continues to try and take us off course.
Trust in the one who has the power and authority and the ultimate victory. Trust Jesus.
Talk to the Lord about the gift represented by the gifts. We can use the words of the carol "We Three Kings" to prompt a discussion on what Jesus gift means for us. The final verse can inspire praise.
- Gold was gift for a King.
- Frankincense was used to worship a god.
- Myrrh was used as a burial ointment.

The Gifts in the Carol.
Gold
Born a king on Bethlehem plain,
Gold I bring to crown him again,
King for ever, ceasing never
Over us all to rein.
Gold I bring to crown him again,
King for ever, ceasing never
Over us all to rein.
Frankincense
Frankincense to offer have I,
Incense owns a Deity nigh;
Prayer and praising all men raising,
Worship him, God on high.
Incense owns a Deity nigh;
Prayer and praising all men raising,
Worship him, God on high.
Myrrh
Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume
Breathes a life of gathering gloom;
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying,
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb.
Breathes a life of gathering gloom;
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying,
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb.
Praise
Glorious now behold him arise;
King and God and sacrifice:
Alleluia, Alleluia,
Sounds through the earth and skies.
King and God and sacrifice:
Alleluia, Alleluia,
Sounds through the earth and skies.
Amen
